The Economic Value of Paint Removal for Aluminum Beverage Cans

In the non-ferrous metal recycling sector—and specifically within the recycled aluminum supply chain—carbonization-based paint removal equipment for aluminum beverage cans is becoming standard infrastructure for large- and medium-sized recyclers and aluminum smelters.

While traditional recycling methods involve feeding used cans directly into the smelting furnace, modern processes employ low-oxygen pyrolysis to completely strip away surface contaminants—such as lubricants, paints, and coatings—prior to smelting.

Inside an oxygen-free or low-oxygen carbonization furnace (operating at approximately 400°C–550°C), the heat causes the molecular chains of the paints and coatings to break down without combustion, converting them into gases that volatilize (pyrolysis). Once stripped of paint, the cans emerge as clean, bright aluminum; consequently, metal loss during the subsequent smelting stage is reduced to a range of 1.5%–3%.

Carbonization-based paint removal boosts the aluminum yield by a conservative 6%, effectively generating an additional 3 tons of pure aluminum daily. Based on international spot prices for recycled aluminum, this not only allows for the recovery of equipment costs within a few months but also secures a continuous stream of pure profit thereafter.

Carbonization ensures the complete separation of aluminum from organic materials. The resulting aluminum ingots feature stable chemical composition and minimal impurities, making them suitable for manufacturing high-specification aluminum sheets, strips, and foils—or even enabling "can-to-can" closed-loop recycling. Such high-quality recycled aluminum commands a significant market premium.
