New Rating System to Extend Lifetime of Electronics, Limit E-Waste

The French officials announced plans to introduce a new rating system that will help better communication of repairability and durability data to consumers. The new rating plan aims to extend the lifetime of electronics, thereby leading to lesser generation of electronic waste.

As per studies, most electronic devices are not fully used to their designed and desired lifetime. For instance, smartphones are found to be replaced between two to three years. By extending the lifetime of these products, we could reduce their environmental and climatic impacts, said the European Environment Agency (EEA).

The French administration has decided to begin implementing the compulsory rating system on Jan. 1, 2021, initially for smartphones, televisions, laptops and certain other household appliances. The product’s packaging will have a repairability score on a scale of 1 to 10 in the form of a sticker. This essentially gives an idea about how long their estimated life is.

It will also contain a QR code, which will help to understand the environmental impacts of the product. This will allow consumers to compare products and choose the ones having less impact on environment.
